How to not let anxiety affect your golf performance

Recently, i’ve had problem with anxiety, and it has taken a toll on my golf performance. I was  having trouble at work, which i resolved now, but at the time, it was causing the anxiety and i couldn’t relax even after i got home. I’ve had enough experience of playing golf to know that this is common among golfers. Lots of us have various forms of anxiety and depression at some point in our lives, and we know what it’s like. There’s also crippling fear that some golfers experience. So that’s what motivated me to write this post. Based on experience of myself and some of my friends, i’ll try to help people get over fear and anxiety to fully enjoy golfing.

What i found, is that the solution lies within the source of your anxiety. Sometimes problems keep piling up, and while they would be easy to solve one at a time, having to solve all these problems all at once can be crippling. Other times it’s money issues and work related problems, like in my case. To this, i think the best solution is to do something distracting. You need to take at least half hour off to think better and have fresh perspective on your problems and ways to solve them. For me, that is usually listening to music, reading newspaper, and eating my favorite chips, in that order. These distractions might be different for you, but they’ll have the same effect nonetheless. You can do these things before golf game, and it will be much easier to shut your mind off for a while and enjoy the game.

Other great method for lifting your spirits is to keep track of everything positive in your life. I saw this advice on some self-improvement blog, and unlike most things written on those blogs, it turned out to be useful. Whenever you notice something you have, an advantage or an asset that you didn’t value before, write it down somewhere and carry it with you. Looking at it will give you more positive perspective and motivation to keep at it. I take these notes in my smartphone, using Google Keep app.

A little bit of shopping can certainly help your anxiety, too. Getting good golf clubs and other accessories can certainly lift you up. It certainly works for me. But you shouldn’t take it to extreme, i would recommend just getting good golf balls. They’re cheap and still pretty uplifting as a purchase. It also goes without saying, that you shouldn’t try to solve all of your problems at once. Take one step at a time, and it will seem much easier.  If even one step is too much, break it down further into even smaller bites. Streamlining problem-solving like this will make it much less frustrating and will speed up the process.

And last, but not least – don’t be afraid to ask for help. Take advantage of connections you might have. For instance, one of your golf-course friends might be in a position to help you. If your anxieties are too severe, seeing a psychologist is also good idea. I know there’s stigma on men seeing psychiatrists, but once you try it, you’ll realize just how helpful they can be.

Sometimes, when problems keep piling up and the pile is too high to keep count, you turn to alcohol and drugs for peace of mind. Drinks and drugs usually work, but only in the short term. In the long term, they damage your organism and sometimes can cause nasty addictions. Today, i want to discuss effects that alcohol and drugs can have on your golf game and life in general. By the way, i’m not talking about drinking casual beer on the golf course. That kind of drinking is never the problem. I’m talking about the kind of drinking that dramatically affects your golf game and even life outside the course. I’ve seen too many great golfers brought down because of drinking, so i know effects that alcohol can have on performance firsthand.

Stress usually causes your golf performance and scores to plummet. So does not having the best golf clubs you can have. Most important clubs are irons, i think, so that’s why i recommend getting game improvement irons, especially if  you’re beginner. This guide should be sufficient in helping you pick the clubs. Golf is game of precision and intelligence, and high levels of stress can harm both. That’s why some golfers turn to heavy drinking as solution. Even though we all agree that alcohol is not good for you, everyone knows that anyway, so instead of bashing your method of relaxation, i’ll try to think of different solutions to your problems. The kind of problems that can cause someone to drink, usually don’t go away by themselves. So my first advice would be to tackle the problems head on. Fully realize what exact problems you’re facing, and start breaking them down into easier steps so you can solve them one step at a time.

Taking on too much problems at once can be paralysing. We tend to worry about what might happen in the future, and possible dangers, and in addition to that, solving these problems seems too difficult and sometimes even useless. To get rid of that, i’d suggest to clear your mind by doing something you like, like watching your favorite series or reading newspaper. Once you’re done, just get started with one problem. Sometimes even getting started and doing one task out of hundred can be liberating of those fears.

No one can tell for sure how things will fit together in the future. Future might be much worse than you imagine, and in that case, working on problems now will make them easier to handle then. But it’s more likely that you might get deus-ex-machina type of help. It’s surprising how many times i’ve been in hopeless situation, and little help from friend or acquintance got me out of it. My point is, future has way too many fitting pieces to put together properly. Don’t focus on what will happen one month from today, focus on today.

How to get in shape for golf

Everyone agrees that golf is physically demanding hobby. It may not look like it, especially with out of shape people on the course, but just because most golfers are missing out on advantages of being in physical shape, doesn’t mean you should too.  You don’t need to get a gym membership for these exercises. Most are simple workouts that can be done using your body weight in your space. These workouts will guide you to perfect body shape for golf. Of course, there are certain muscles that need more focus than the others, and we’ll discuss those as well.

It’s also common knowledge that muscles need something to grow off. Usually that food source is protein, which you can get by eating meats and certain plants. There are also alternatives like buying protein powder or protein energy bars, so it’ totally up to your taste.

Before you go to the golf course, you’ll need to do certain warm-up exercises to get your body ready for the real game. These warm up exercises usually take no more than ten or fifteen minutes, so it won’t take too much time off your schedule.
